Happy Chickens

One of our silver-laced Wyandotte hens enjoying Booster Juice pulp

At Walnut Hollow Farm, our chickens eat very well, and in turn produce nutritious eggs!

Chickens are omnivores, and love to eat a variety of foods. Ours get non-GMO layer ration, chicken scratch, organic vegetables from our garden such as cabbage and kale, and leftovers and compost fruits and veggies from the farmhouse. Bread crusts are a favourite treat. They are also welcome to eat bugs, clover and other good things when they are out on pasture. Oyster shells are added free choice to bulk up their calcium supply. These girls make the most delicious eggs! The yolks are orange, rather than that pale, sickly yellow that store-bought eggs have. We are so blessed.

The pale peachy ones are from the Wyandottes, the brown ones from our Red Sex Linked, and the blue and green ones are from mixed hens (Easter Egger and Olive Egger crossed on Red Sex Linked?) that our friend Rowena bred for us.

This is Wren, one of our hens from Rowena. She has stunning patterns on her feathers and is the most likely to “get in a flap” of all of our chickens
